“This way of living – where we are veering haphazardly, being run by circumstances and having no real say about our direction or destination – does not allow us to be in the driving seat of our own lives. And sitting in the back seat of an out-of-control life rarely provides opportunities for thriving or growth.” Kemi Nekvapil
HELLO Lock-down #2 2020
Whether it is home schooling, domestic pressures, combining work and home life, calming anxiety or even tracking down a re-usable face mask, we could all do with sticking our hands up at the moment to ask for help. So why is it so hard for us to do this?
Finding solutions to problems, overcoming obstacles and coming across as totally capable to the outside world is my default position. Something as simple as asking a friend to call you back for a chat, when you are feeling like you are not coping and don’t even want to get out of bed, can feel like a real challenge (I am sure I am not alone here).
Ironically, I personally love to help and support others. I feel like I am contributing positively to the world and it is a tangible way that I can show my friends that I care for them and appreciate that they are part of my life.
This week I have reached for “The Gift of Asking” by Kemi Nekvapil; a book that provides insight into why many of us struggle to ask for what we need or showing a way forward to be able to ask confidentially and offering advice on what to do if the answer is NO.
We all need a little help sometimes, no more so than now.
Allow others to step up to help. Give yourself permission to ask. Start small and give others the gift of allowing them to contribute to you.
